memory is the last drop that never ends, memory will never dry out | knit type writer

The piece was created on a 4-day durational responsive performance to the Brooklyn Arts Hotel closure  - a knit typewriter which collects words from the many guest books and unwinds the hotels time-served blankets to produce an on-site textile installation. The hacked knitting machine uses an open source hard-and software to have real time control over the needles and knit digital patterns, the knit itself is manually operated. A collaborative work of techno-craft.
The matter - tangible and intangible - celebrates and perpetuates the memory of the hotel through an expanded spacial, relational and material practice.
The artefact becomes a vessel of a process based immersive exploration of the poetics of memory and kinship. Memory will never dry out, the hotel will exist forever. ‘Memory is not a matter of the past but recreates the past each time it is invoked’ (Karen Barad 2012). The work explores immersive processes of making and the artifact as vessels of emotion, kinship and meaning to invoke time and create memory.
